Lionel Ainsworth: 2012/2013 Biography & Statistics

Lionel is a pacy attacking midfielder, who can also play on either wing.

He began his career as a scholar at Derby County (where future Shots boss Dean Holdsworth was player-assistant manager) and made appearances for England at various youth levels. He signed full pro forms at Pride Park in September 2005 and made his senior debut as a late substitute in a Championship fixture against Plymouth Argyle the following February.

During the 2006-07 season, Lionel had loan spells at AFC Bournemouth, Halifax Town (where he scored his first senior goal against York City on his January debut) and Wycombe Wanderers before being released by Derby that summer.

Following a trial at Bristol Rovers, he signed for League 2 side Hereford United in August 2007 and proceeded to score a first half hat-trick in only his second game, a League Cup first round tie against Yeovil Town. He was soon attracting attention from higher-league clubs and scored his first Football League goal against Morecambe in mid-September. Lionel then enhanced his reputation no end in the space of 11 days in the November by being part of the Bulls side that held Leeds United in an FA Cup first round tie and scoring a hat-trick in a league game against Stockport County before scoring the only goal of the game after just three minutes to seal an historic replay victory against Leeds.

The latter game proved to be his last in a Bulls shirt as he joined Championship side Watford on loan shortly after, with an undisclosed fee seeing the move become permanent in the January transfer window. By the end of the 2007-08 season, he had helped the Hornets claim a play-off place by virtue of a sixth-place finish and subsequently played in both legs of the semi-final defeat by Hull City.

Following a two-month loan spell back at Edgar Street (the final game of which saw him put in a man-of-the-match performance and score twice against Oldham Athletic), Lionel joined Huddersfield Town in January 2009, but he was in and out of the team and eventually had a three-month loan at Brentford towards the end of the 2009-10 season before moving to Shrewsbury Town on a free transfer in the summer of 2010.

A rejuvenated Lionel made 33 appearances and scored nine goals (his best-ever total), including a hat-trick against Lincoln City in early February as the Shrews finished the 2010-11 campaign in fourth spot in League 2. However, he again played in both legs of a play-off semi-final defeat, this time at the hands of Torquay United.

The 2011-12 season began well for Lionel as he was part of the side that caused League Cup upsets by beating former club Derby County in the first round and FA Premier League Swansea City in round 2. He made 21 league appearances that season before being loaned out to divisional rivals Burton Albion in the March and was eventually released at the end of a campaign that saw the Shrews finish as runners-up to Swindon Town, thus attaining promotion.

In July 2012, Lionel joined Rotherham United, for whom he scored a debut goal against Championship side Hull City in a League Cup first round tie that the Millers eventually lost on penalties. A week later, he played against Burton Albion in the first-ever competitive fixture at the recently-opened New York Stadium and went on to make 13 appearances in all competitions before signing for Aldershot Town (managed by Dean Holdsworth) on a two-month loan in the January 2013 transfer window.
