Ben Herd: 2012/2013 Biography & Statistics

Ben is an attacking right back, who began his career as a scholar with local side Watford, signing full pro forms in May 2003.

He was released in the summer of 2005 without making a first team appearance at Vicarage Road and signed for Shrewsbury Town, making his debut on the opening day of the 2005-06 League 2 season at home to Rochdale; he started all-but-one of the Shrews games that season and soon became a fan-favourite.

Ben's appearances in the 2006-07 season were restricted by injury, with an ankle ligament injury picked up against Barnet in the March expected to keep him out of action till past the campaign's end. However, he made a surprise start in that season's League 2 play-off final after Luke Jones was injured in the warm-up; Town were beaten 3-1 by Bristol Rovers in that game.

Ben missed just one league game in 2007-08 and the 2008-09 season went well until he was suspended in the November. Unfortunately for Ben, he played just five more games that season (but was not involved in any of the Shrews' three play-off games) before being released.

In July 2009, Ben trialled with the Shots and impressed sufficiently to sign a two-year deal, thus ending a year-long quest by boss Gary Waddock for someone to fill the right back berth.

The start of Ben's Shots career was thwarted by medial ligament damage sustained on his debut against Darlington on the opening day of 2009-10, which sidelined him for six weeks; he also suffered an ankle injury near end of the campaign, but was fit enough to play in the play-off semi-final defeat to Rotherham United, which denied the Shots what would have been rightly judged as a surprising promotion to League 1.

It wasn't all bad for Ben that season, though, as he won both the supporters' and players' 'Player of the Year' award.

The 2010-11 season saw Ben involved in the richly-deserved 2-1 victory over League 1 side Brentford in an FA Cup first round replay as well as the shocking 2-0 loss at Conference South outfit Dover Athletic in the next round.

He made his 200th Football League appearance against Bradford City midway through January 2011, scored his first goal for the Shots (in fact, his first goal since October 2006) in the victory over former club Shrewsbury in the April and played the 250th game of his career in the final home game of the season against Rotherham United. He missed just four games in all competitions in 2010-11 and rounded the season off by retaining the 'Players' Player of the Year' award.

Ben was named as team captain for 2011-12 and led the team in the giant-killing defeat of Championship side West Ham United in the League Cup first round at Upton Park in late August (the Shots' first-ever win in the competition); he was also part of the side that beat League 1 sides Carlisle United and Rochdale in the competition before losing to FA Premier League powerhouse Manchester United at a filled-to-capacity EBB Stadium in round 4 (the furthest the club had ever gone in the competition).

He made his 250th Football League appearance against Barnet in February 2012 and finished the season having played in all-but-one of the club's 54 matches in all competitions.

Signed a one-year contract extension in June 2012.
