Anthony McNamee: 2012/2013 Biography & Statistics

Anthony is a tricky, left-footed wide midfielder/winger, who is the cousin of fellow midfielders Bobby Reid (Bristol City) and Craig Rocastle (ex-Oldham Athletic).

He was a member of Aldershot Town's youth team before becoming a scholar at Watford (he was the first-ever Shots player to join a Football League club), with whom he made his senior debut as a second half substitute against Coventry City in a Division 1 fixture in mid-March 2002. He made his first start against Portsmouth a month later before signing full pro forms and then scoring a superb 25-yarder against Gillingham on final day of the 2001-02 campaign.

Anthony's performances eventually led to him making his England Under-19 debut as a substitute against Yugoslavia in October 2002 and playing against FYR Macedonia and Romania in European Under-19 Championship qualifiers the following month. He also played for the England Under-20s in all three games in the Toulon Tournament in the summer of 2003 and had a spell on loan at Conference side Barnet at the end of that year.

He eventually established himself in Watford's first team and made 38 appearances in 2005-06 as third place in the Championship was attained; he was an unused substitute in both legs of the subsequent play-off semi-final victory over Crystal Palace, but was not involved in the final win over Leeds United at the Millenium Stadium. Anthony made his FA Premier League debut against Sheffield United in late November 2006, scored an acrobatic winning goal against West Ham United in an FA Cup fourth round tie in late January 2007 and, having made six more top-flight appearances, saw out the final two months of the 2006-07 season on loan at Crewe Alexandra.

In January 2008, an undisclosed fee saw him become newly-appointed Swindon Town boss Maurice Malpas' first signing and played in all-but-two of the Robins' remaining League 1 games. In 2008-09, he was a member of the side beaten by Histon in the FA Cup first round, but his performances in the 43 league games he played that season led to Norwich City offering £200,000 for his services in August 2009. Having turned down the aforementioned bid, Swindon eventually allowed Anthony to go to Carrow Road on loan three months later, with an undisclosed fee seeing the move become permanent in the January transfer window; he went on to make 17 appearances as the League 1 title was secured.

The following season, the Canaries secured promotion to the FA Premier League by finishing as runners-up to Queen's Park Rangers, but a proposed change to the team's playing style saw him exit and join Milton Keynes Dons in August 2011.

Strangely, Anthony made just eight appearances before going on a one-month loan to Wycombe Wanderers in the November, scoring on his debut against Chesterfield and in his next outing against Carlisle United. Although he returned to his parent club at the end of the loan, he was released shortly after and rejoined the Chairboys for the remainder of the season.

Having trialed at Bradford City in the summer of 2012, Anthony dropped into the Conference Premier with Macclesfield Town and played his part in beating former club Swindon Town 2-0 in the FA Cup first round before returning to Aldershot Town in the January 2013 transfer window.
