Craig Reid: 2012/2013 Biography & Statistics

Craig is a hard-working Coventry-born striker who began his career as a winger.

Having played schoolboy football for his hometown club and been a scholar at Ipswich Town, he returned to the Sky Blues where, having converted to a striker, he scored 16 goals in 24 reserve team games. He went on loan at Conference National side Tamworth in March 2006 and made his senior debut against Gravesend and Northfleet midway through the month.

Following trials at Stockport County and Scottish clubs Falkirk, St.Mirren, Dunfermline Athletic and Dundee, Craig joined Cheltenham Town in January 2007 and made his Football League debut from the bench at Huddersfield Town shortly after. He top-scored for the Robins' reserves in 2006-07 (11 goals in 13 games), scored his first senior goal against Swindon Town in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round tie in October 2007 before being released in the summer of 2008.

After a brief spell at Grays Athletic and a trial with Wycombe Wanderers, Craig joined Conference South side Newport County (managed by future Shots boss Dean Holdsworth) in September 2008 and proceeded to score three times in his first four games. His first senior hat-trick came against Chelmsford City in early January 2009 and a trio of goals in the final four games of the season saw him finish as the Exiles' top scorer with 21 goals in all competitions.

The 2009-10 season was even better for both club and player: Craig scored in six consecutive games across August and September (8 goals) and scored the same amount again in a six-game spell from early December to late January. By the end of the campaign, Craig's 24 league goals saw him finish as the Conference South's top goalscorer as well as earning him the division's 'Player of the Year' trophy and a place in the 'Conference South Team of the Year'. His 27 goals in all competitions easily made him Newport's top scorer and contributed massively to the title being won by a massive margin of 28 points.

That fine form continued into the 2010-11 season and his 18 goals in 33 games (which would eventually give him a third successive 'top scorer' accolade) paved the way for a £100,000 January transfer deadline day move to Stevenage. During his time at Newport, Craig had scored an impressive 66 goals in 112 appearances, whilst fee that County received equalled their record sale.

He made 20 appearances for Boro following his move and scored from the penalty spot in the 3-3 draw with Bury on the final day of the 'regular' season that secured sixth place and a play-off spot; he subsequently played in both legs of the semi-final victory over Accrington Stanley as well as the promotion-winning victory over Torquay United in the final at Old Trafford.

Craig started Boro's first-ever League 1 game against Exeter City on the opening day of the 2011-12 season and followed that up with three goals in his next four games. He sustained a groin injury in mid-November, which kept him sidelined until the end of February, but that was later forgotten as a goal in each of the final two games of the 'regular' season helped secure wins over Brentford and Bury, resulting in a second successive sixth spot finish; unfortunately, Boro fell at the play-off semi-final stage this time, losing 1-0 to Sheffield United over two legs.

In July 2012, Aldershot Town paid an undisclosed fee to secure Craig on a two-year deal, thus reuniting him with ex-Newport boss Dean Holdsworth.
