Oliver Risser: 2012/2013 Biography & Statistics

Oliver is a Namibian-German defensive midfielder, who can also play at centre back and is the older brother of ex-Shots striker Wilko Risser. He has won 27 caps for Namibia, captaining the side on several occasions.

Oliver started his career in the youth system at hometown club Ramblers Windhoek before going to study in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany in the summer of 1999. However, the fact he was continuing his education prevented him from signing a professional contract at any club so, in order to carry on playing (curriculum permitting), Oliver joined SpVgg EGC Wirges, who played in the Oberliga Südwest (fifth tier). He trialed at Kilmarnock, Airdrie United (played against Raith Rovers) and Cowdenbeath (against Stenhousemuir) in November 2002 before being a member of the Wirges side that won the Rhineland Cup six months later.

Between July 2003 and March 2009, Oliver turned out for Borussia Dortmund Reserves, SV Sandhausen, Bonner SC and Hannover 96 Reserves in Germany's lower leagues (punctuated only by a three-month spell at Icelandic Úrvalsdeild side Breidablik UBK in the summer of 2006). In March 2009, he joined Norwegian third tier side Mangelrud Star and was loaned to Premier Division side Lyn Oslo five months later before making the move to the Frogner Stadion permanent in April 2010.

Unfortunately, Lyn were declared bankrupt a couple of months later, but Oliver remained in the Nordic Region by joining Finnish side Kuopion Palloseura, with whom he finished as runners-up to HJK Helsinki in the 2010 Veikkausliiga. He left Kuopion in January 2011 and was without a club until he trialed at Swindon Town in July of that year, impressing sufficiently to be signed and named as captain.

Oliver made his debut in English football against Crewe Alexandra on opening day of the 2011-12 season, marking the occasion with a goal, but he sustained a groin injury against Southend United in early September and was sidelined for a while; once fit, he became a first team regular.

In March 2012, Oliver became the first Namibian to appear at Wembley Stadium, when he was a member of the Robins' side that lost to Chesterfield in the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, with his disappointment being compounded by having the misfortune to score an own goal just after the break. However, having made 32 league appearances, the season ended on a high as the League 2 title was won.

Oliver was loaned to Stevenage in August 2012 and made 13 appearances (scoring once) before being released by Swindon and joining Aldershot Town in the January transfer window.
