Gordon Henry- RIP

Aldershot Town Football Club were saddened to learn of the passing of Gordon Henry prior to Christmas.

Gordon was born in Troon on 9 October 1930. He joined Aldershot FC from St Mirren in 1956 and spent seven years as a player at the Recreation Ground making 203 appearances in all competitions scoring 19 goals before joining Salisbury City.

He made his Shots debut in a Football League Division 3 (South) fixture at Swindon Town on 18 August 1956 in front of 10,966 spectators at the County Ground.

His first goal for the club was in a 4-0 victory against Northampton Town the same season.

Gordon was also an ever present in the FA Cup run of 1960/61 when after defeating Notts County and Colchester United Aldershot were paired with Shrewsbury Town in the third round. The match took two replays before Shots came through 2-0 winners with Gordon scoring one of the goals.

In the fourth round Stoke City were the opponents. After two goaless draws the Shots were finally defeated in a second replay at Wolverhampton Wanderers ground, 3-0.

Gordon was also part of the giant killing FA Cup side of 1964 that defeated Aston Villa in the third round. After a goaless draw at Villa Park in front of 21,912 spectators Shots defeated the West Midlands side 2-1 at the Rec in a replay with 13,566 people packed into the Rec.
